Winemaker Notes

The estate Grenache has spicy, floral aromas, rich red cherry and strawberry flavors, and a refined balance of acidity and tannins.

Pair with: mustard-glazed lamb chops, Moroccan chicken or beef tagine, roasted eggplant and tomatoes.

Blend: 83% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 2% Mourvedre.

This full-bodied wine has a rather light color. Aromas seem roasted and savory rather than fruity, leading to attractive spicy, meaty, almost mushroomy flavors. The texture is on the lean side, moderately tannic and quite dry.

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.

Famous even as early as the 1800s for its hefty Zinfandels, the California Shenandoah Valley wine industry naturally halted with Prohibition. But the region gained momentum again in the 1970s with renewed enthusiasm for the potential of its old vines.
