Style: Earthy & Spicy

Wine Style Guide

Light & Fruity

Red wines that are more fruit-forward and lighter in tannin and body.

Smooth & Supple

Medium bodied reds that go down easy, with smooth tannins and supple fruit.

Earthy & Spicy

Wines where earthy and/or spicy dominate the flavors – typically medium to full body.

Big & Bold

Full bodied wines that have concentrated fruit and are higher in alcohol and/or tannins. Some need age.

Alcohol By Volume: 13.3%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Ideal for everyday, informal drinking at home with family or with friends, a great wine to relax and unwind. Pairs well with a wide variety of dishes. Altano reflects its Douro origins perfectly: generous aromas of wildflowers (rockrose and lavender); full-bodied structure with fresh and assertive fruit (plums and black cherries); spicy, peppery tones, all seamlessly held together.

Critical Acclaim

"Wild plum and berry flavors are concentrated and well-rounded in this balanced, fresh-tasting red, which shows hints of chocolate on the finish."
88 Points

"An organic red table wine from the Syminton family; smooth and dense with ripe berries, spice and cassis; long and lush with savory notes and conentrated flavors."
88 Points

"A warm, ripe vintage of Altano, its berry and red plum fruits rich and generous. It has attractive, well-balanced, soft tannins. A layer of acidity and spice completes this harmonious wine.

There are a multitude of grape varieties throughout the world, however, in a Darwinian sense, survival of the fittest only brings us wines made from grapes that can adapt to changing climates and winemaking techniques.
