Winemaker's Notes

This Cornas is from a single parcel of very old vine (80 years) on a beautiful granitic soil. Thanks to the age of vines and their very deep roots in the poor soil, there is a maximal expression of this terroir via the Syrah.

Critical Acclaim

"With the brilliant oenologist who worked for Michel Chapoutier for many years, Alberic Mazoyers, now firmly installed at Domaine Alain Voge, these wines are taking off in a spectacular manner (not that they weren’t very impressive in previous vintages). An absolutely monumental Cornas, and one of the finest wines I have tasted from this provincial/rustic appellation is the opaque purple-colored 2005 Cornas Cuvee Vieilles Fontaines. Full-bodied with extraordinary concentration, notes of scorched earth, roasted meats, sweet cassis, blackberry, truffle as well as charcoal, the wine is intense, with majestic depth and texture and a long, rich, full, powerful finish. This is truly stunning stuff that should prove to be a monumental effort in this vintage. It should age effortlessly for 15+ years. 92-95"

He decided to specialise in wine. At the time, it was an audacious decision: despite their history, the Cornas and Saint Peray appellations were forgotten sleeping beauties. Very quickly, he...

The hills of Cornas are steep and hug the Rhone river, as many Northern Rhone appellations do. Cornas is typically best when aged for up to 10 years, although pioneer winemakers, like Jean-Luc Columbo...

Learn About Syrah/Shiraz

(seh-RAH/shee-RAHZ) It's a Smokin' Grape Syrah and Shiraz - same grape, different name. It's a popular and adept variety, growing in multiple regions and creating many different styles of wine. The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
