In 1970 the McKay family left Ireland to settle in Western Australia and purchased a grazing property in Margaret River, which they have developed over many years into Abbey Vale Vineyard. The Margaret River region has earned a reputation as a premium wine grape growing area, as the soil types and mild coastal climate result in a quality and consistency of fruit that is the envy of other regional growers.
Kevin, the youngest son and a graduate of Muresk Agricultural College, planted 90 acres of vines on the property and has carefully nurtured the vineyard to its current production of 300 tonnes.
In addition to fruit from the home vineyard, selected fruit from five additional vineyards managed by Abbey Vale supplements the total production of 35,000 cases.
Having successfully established the vineyard, Kevin and his parents Bill and Pam McKay built a modern winery facility and barrel store on the property. It combines the best of new technology with proven traditional techniques to ensure the exceptional quality created in the vineyard is preserved in the finished product. Outstanding quality is further assured by bottling all wines on the estate.
An attractive cellar door and tasting room overlooking the large lake, vineyards and native Jarrah forest further reflect the style and distinction of Abbey Vale Vineyard.
