Winemaker's Notes

It is ironic that one of the youngest properties in the region has one of the most prestigious lineages, but it is the case with Bodegas Aalto. A chance meeting between Mariano Garcia, former star winemaker of Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini, former President of the governing body of the Ribera del Duero AOC, gave birth to this quality-oriented estate which produced its first vintage in 1999, a year after its creation.

100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) from 40-100 year old vines.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2003 Aalto is a purple-colored wine offering a stylish nose of smoke, toast, graphite, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. On the palate it is medium to full-bodied, ripe, but slightly compact and the finish is firm."
92 Points

"Ruby-red. Intense perfume of boysenberry, sexy oak spices, vanilla and candied flowers. The concentrated flavors of red and dark berries and vanilla are almost sweet but are nicely lifted by juicy acidity. Finishes lush, broad and long, with supple tannins. Those who are laying out $100+ for California cult cabs ought to give this wine a go."
91 Points

"Ripe fruit flavors of black cherry and fig are sweetened by vanilla oak in this plush, jammy red. The tannins are big, ripe and well-integrated. "
90 Points

"This is all about texture, with velvety flavors of blackberry, fig and chocolate floating on fleshy tannins. Decant this for barbecued ribs. "

As early as the 16th century, the region began to establish rules governing varietals and quality levels. Located northwest of Madrid, the region is based around the Duero river which unites over...
