Winemaker Notes

The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon was first produced in 1944, the year after our family purchased the winery. The finest fruit of the 2012 vintage was hand-picked during night harvests and truly expresses the terroir of select blocks in our Voltz and Slinsen vineyards. The 2012 vintage is full-bodied with blackberry and coffee bean aromas enhanced by baked berry, caramel and vanilla flavors producing a truly elegant and supple wine.

Wonderful aromas of sweet tobacco, black licorice, lead pencil and graphite. Full body with juicy and velvety tannins that give the wine energy and form. Better in 2020 but try it now.

The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection comes from the Voltz and Slinsen vineyards. This cuvée ratchets up the levels of extract and concentration, exhibiting a dense ruby/purple color, more structure and aging potential (15-20 years), lots of blackberry and boysenberry fruit intermixed with subtle vanillin from new oak barrels, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. It possesses lots of character as well as plenty of promise. It can be drunk now or over the next 15-20 years.

Charles Krug Winery Video

In 1861, Charles Krug, the visionary father of Napa Valley winemaking, established the winery that started it all. In 1943, Cesare and Rosa Mondavi purchased this iconic estate and continued to build on its reputation for innovation and uncompromising quality. Their son, Peter Mondavi Sr., carried on this tradition remaining active in the winery until his passing in 2016 at the age of 101.

Today his two sons–Peter Jr. and Marc–steward the family business as co-proprietors intent on building a lasting legacy for their children and those generations still to come. 2018 marked the 75th Anniversary of four generations of Mondavi Family ownership of Charles Krug.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
