Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Le Caprice has a deep ruby color with a bright crimson tinge. Its shows intense aromas of raspberry liqueur, red cherry and blackberry mixed with Russian leather and graphite. The palate is expressive and delivers Grillottes cherry, sandalwood, raspberry, wild strawberry, pheasant fur, forest floor and leather. The texture is round, tactile, mineral and fragrant. The wine is already expressive and will continue to develop for at least two decades.

The purity of fruit here is impressive, with raspberry, iodine and hints of mussel shell. Créme de framboise. Full body with firm, silky tannins and a long finish. The aromatics are crazy here. Great tannin structure. The finish comes out of nowhere with aniseed.

Lusher, more expansive and savory, the 2012 Pinot Noir La Caprice (1,485 cases) possesses stunning richness, and is more approachable and exuberant than the 2013 with the vintage’s boisterousness and heady, intense fruit well-displayed. The color is a dense ruby/plum/purple, and the wine exhibits lots of red and blackcurrant, dark cherry and foresty notes. It, too, should drink well for 10-15 years.

While tight and tannic, this slowly unfolds to reveal a more supple, graceful core of plum and wild berry fruit that's firmly tannic without being weighty, ending with a charming finish that echoes the wilted rose suppleness of the core flavors. Drink now through 2022.

Peter Michael, California
Peter Michael Winery Image
In 1982 Sir Peter and Lady Margaret Michael built the Peter Michael Winery on a square mile of rocky volcanic ridges that form the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley, Sonoma County, California. The estate vineyards rest on steep hillsides ranging in elevation from 1100 to nearly 2000 feet. Of the nearly 600 estate acres, only about 20% are planted to grapes. Peter Michael Winery is best known for single-vineyard and estate grown Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Cabernet Sauvignon cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The Peter Michael Winery remains true to its commitment to growing classic grape varieties in small mountain vineyards in order to produce great wines using classical winemaking techniques. Given this covenant to the product, only a limited quantity will ever be available.
