Winemaker Notes

The Penfolds RWT Shiraz 2011 is deep mauve - an impressive color and brightness. Barossa fruits ascend – preserved satsuma plum, rhubarb, cranberry. Another pertinent aromatic are cedar and restrained French oak. The wine is solid, forceful, and full-bodied. Fine, pronounced, and persistent tannins court blue and black-berried fruits, sensitively encapsulating a sweet mid-palate. French oak of mixed forest origin and age works its magic – sensitive to this vintage's flavors and structure, kindly endowed by Barossa vineyards and soils. A supple, woven/pleated fabric texture validates the inclusion of this blend's chosen vineyard components, and its relatively brief sojourn in oak pre-bottling.

Professional Ratings

All French oak (51% new, the balance 1yo) and plenty of perfume on offer here, raspberry, blackberry and red plum, really fragrant fruit that is accented by additional oak fragrance. The palate has tangy cut, slightly jumpy, quite taut - the vintage has this captive for now. Time will see it unwind and there's a bright wine that has plenty of Barossa power built in - give this time.

Aged in 51% new oak, all of which is French, the deep purple-black colored 2011 RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz reveals a gorgeous, black fruit and warm blueberry nose enhanced by violets and pepper notes with hints of tree bark and earth. Medium to full-bodied with a great amount of expressive flavor framed by firm, grainy tannins, the oak pokes out a bit on the long finish. Drink 2015 to 2028+.

Ripe and supple, with a sense of transparency to raspberry, red plum, clove and espresso flavors, lingering on the expressive finish. Rich in flavor without being weighty.

Penfolds Wines, Australia
Penfolds Wines Winery Video

Penfolds has been producing remarkable wines since 1844 and indisputably led the development of Australian fine wine in the modern era. The introduction of Penfolds Grange in 1951 forever changed the landscape of Australian fine wine. Since then a series of stand-out wines both white and red have been released under the Penfolds masthead.

Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker and only the 4th custodian of Grange, relishes the opportunity to bring Penfolds to the world stage and is an enthusiastic ambassador and natural educator. Penfolds came to the attention of the US market when 1990 Grange was Wine Spectator’s ‘Wine of the Year’. Since then, Penfolds Grange has become one of the most collectable wines of the world and was honored to grace the front cover, once again, of Wine Spectator, with declarations of Grange as Australia’s Icon.
