Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The wine has rich aromas of hot, spicy cherry pie over notes of sweet cedar oak and nuances of Chinese 5 spice. The palate is rich and lingering and is framed by elegance. Flavors of black cherry, plum and vanilla blend seamlessly with layers of truffle oak and spice.

Two excellent wines from winemaker Wayne Donaldson include an impressive blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, the 4,088-case cuvee of 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Route 29 (the famous wine road that cuts through Napa Valley). It offers classic notes of cassis, tobacco leaf, licorice, fruitcake and wood spice. Although it was aged 24 months in wood, that is certainly not apparent from the wine-s aromas and flavors. Seriously endowed, dense, ripe and long, it is a delicious wine to drink over the next 4-6 years, possibly longer.

RouteStock is an invitation to discover the deep roots of winemaking in Napa and Sonoma, planted firmly at each step of your journey through our vineyard sites. Every glass tells the story of Napa’s remarkable fine wine heritage, from the famous routes that wind between the vineyards, to the roots that produce its world-renowned grapes. An endeavor of enduring Napa-based importer Wilson Daniels, RouteStock is established as a product that consistently over-delivers in quality at a very attractive price point.

At the core of RouteStock is their commitment to sourcing great fruit from high-end vineyards along well-known routes in the Napa Valley. They partner with a select group of dedicated grape-growers in the best viticultural areas for each of the varietals: Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, Carneros for Chardonnay, and the Sonoma Coast for Pinot Noir. Like every aspect of RouteStock, these appellations were individually selected with care to put each varietal at the greatest advantage and make the best possible wines while also showcasing their uniqueness.

Work is done hand-in-hand with all of the growers during cultivation season. The winery practices minimal intervention in their winemaking to help the grapes show their true character, using native yeasts, natural malolactic fermentation, 100% barrel aging, and no chemical additions. The intent is to let the grapes and vintage tell us what kind of wine they should be – never try to force the wine into a specific mold, but rather serve as a guide on its journey. Winemaker, Vance Rose, an industry veteran for nearly 40 years, provides s competitive advantage in the vineyard sourcing through the strong relationships he forged during his path to RouteStock Winemaker.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
