Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The notably cool growing season gave our 2010 Beaulieu Vineyard Reserve Tapestry very elegant and aromatic dark-red fruit character. Hints of sun-warmed roses weave through cherry liqueur and briary blackberry notes, which come from the wine's core of Cabernet Sauvignon. The plush, midpalate texture and dark chocolate–cherry truffle nuances reveal a generous blending of Merlot, while Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec add the rose, forest loam, and graphite notes.

Blend: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 3% each Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec

Professional Ratings

Glides along, offering an alluring mix of dense, dark blueberry, melted black licorice, grippy loamy earth and tannins that give the flavors traction. Impressive on the finish. This will appeal to those who like to chew on their reds.

The deep ruby/purple-tinged 2010 Tapestry Reserve, a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, is earthy and spicy displaying hints of herbs, underbrush, sweet black currants and oak in the background. It is a medium-bodied, elegant 2010 to drink over the next 10-12 years.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
