Winemaker Notes

Dense crimson purple in color. Ripe dark cherries, summer pudding and blackberry jam with hints of cinnamon and vanilla. Rich and juicy with flavors of wild blackberries and black forest cake. The tannins are ripe and generous, while the finish is fresh, lingering and leaves the impression of ripe summer berries. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Professional Ratings

Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Shiraz has a good intensity of ripe mulberry, warm plum and blackberry preserve aromas with hints of baking spices, tree bark and loam. Medium bodied, it offers a good concentration of vibrant flavors in the mouth with a medium level of velvety tannins, lively acid and a long finish with the baking spices coming through. Drink it now to 2016+.

Family owned and operated, Barossa Earthworks make its wines from 100% Barossa grapes, grown at small family owned vineyards. Drawing on more than 160 years of local wine knowledge, traditional winemaking methods and minimal processing are used to preserve the purity, integrity, texture and flavor of the wines. The grapes for the Earthworks Collection of wines come from our loyal growers throughout the Barossa. Soils, site and viticultural practices vary considerably, but the one common factor in these vineyards is the unmistakable generosity that shines through in the wine. Earthworks is the best of the Barossa, made entirely from Barossa grapes from trusted family growers. Earthworks embodies our fierce commitment to quality and a determination to preserve the independence and heritage of the Barossa Valley. The wines at Earthworks are made at our cellars true to region, a good drink to share with meals and mates.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Barossa Valley Wine

Barossa, Australia

Historically and presently the most important wine-producing region of Australia, the Barossa Valley is set in the Barossa zone of South Australia, where more than half of the country’s wine is made. Because the climate is very hot and dry, vineyard managers work diligently to ensure grapes reach the perfect levels of phenolic ripeness.

The intense heat is ideal for plush, bold reds, particularly Shiraz on its own or Rhône Blends. Often Shiraz and Cabernet partner up for plump and powerful reds.

While much less prevalent, light-skinned varieties such as Riesling, Viognier or Semillon produce vibrant Barossa Valley whites.

Most of Australia’s largest wine producers are based here and Shiraz plantings date back as far as the 1850s or before. Many of them are dry farmed and bush trained, still offering less than one ton per acre of inky, intense, purple juice.
