Winemaker Notes

A dry, low cropping season following a continuation of drought conditions in Southern Australia which have now entered their eighth year.

The color has bright youthful purples and dark red, with an aroma of mixed berries with peppery, spicy overtones. On the palate the wine has very sweet fruit with fine grained tannins, excellent fleshy middle palate and a long soft finish.

An homage to the Sydney wine shop and restaurant of Len Evans, the late, great international impresario of Australian wine, Bulletin Place is a spicy shiraz with bright blueberry flavors. It’s juicy, warm and peppery, a red to serve with grilled lamb kabobs.

Bulletin Place was founded by Leonard Paul “Len” Evans. A leader at the forefront of the early Australian wine industry’s drive for quality and international recognition, Evans was often referred to as “the godfather of the Australian wine industry” and was Decanter Magazine’s “Man of the Year” in 1997. A former chairman of the National, Sydney, and Adelaide Wine Shows, he was also the founder and expert blender of Evans Wine Company, which was established to export Australian wines around the world. The principal export label, Bulletin Place, was named for Evans’ famous club and shop in Sydney. After Evans’ death in 2007, Bill Calabria, owner of Calabria Family Wines, took over the Bulletin Place label. Calabria Family Wines is a dynamic family-owned company that was established in 1945 in the Riverina region. They are committed to producing outstanding premium wines and are proud to carry on Len Evans’ great tradition through the Bulletin Place brand.”

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
