Winemaker Notes

Our 2008 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is crafted to highlight the best qualities of our estate vineyards. Dark, rich and extracted, this wine has aromas of cassis, black cherry and currants. Balanced oak nuances add both a sweetness and roundness to this aromatic and powerful wine. Extraordinarily complex, while amazingly rich and smooth in the mouth, this wine offers superb richness and balance, and builds in intensity. The huge finishing fruit coats the entire palate.

Blend: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Petite Sirah, 1% Malbec

Professional Ratings

A fine Cabernet from this veteran producer, elegant and stylish. Not one of your fruit bombs, it shows modulated blackberry, currant and herb flavors, leading to a long, spicy finish. Really distinguished, although it’s not an ager. Contains a splash of Syrah and Petite Sirah for complexity and color.

In the Spring of 1993 California publisher, Patrick O'Dell, purchased Johnson Turnbull Vineyards and renamed the property Turnbull Wine Cellars. The remodeling and expansion of the facility has been completed. In addition, the wines have gone through change due to the inclusion of fruit from additional vineyards purchased by Patrick. Turnbull Wine Cellars has 145 acres of vineyards within the Oakville and Calistoga districts of Napa Valley representing a diverse range of microclimates and terroirs within these fabled grape-growing centers of Napa Valley.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
