Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Sourced from choice vine rows within the BV4 block of Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, this brooding, black-garnet beauty is a testament to the potential for power, breadth and sophistication afforded by this ideal terroir. 100% cabernet sauvignon, it boasts vivid varietal character beginning with enticing nose bursting with cassis, black currant and tobacco leaf. The expansive palate opens slowly, first to impressions of red currant and mocha wrapped tightly around a backbone of graphite and baker's cocoa. The mid-palate adds undertones of pie crust, lavender and dark roast coffee. Massive but fine-grained tannins persist from beginning to end, supporting, broadening and lengthening this exquisite wine

From the amazing Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard, Hobbs’ 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a slightly more opulent, broader, savory effort that comes close to the perfect 2002. The 2007 has more noticeable tannin than the 2002 did at the same stage as well as more obvious minerality, but notes of graphite, black currant liqueur, licorice, cedar, and spice box are found in this full-bodied, multidimensional, fabulously concentrated wine. It was aged in 100% new Taransaud French oak barrels. Rating: 98+

An n ultrarich Cabernet whose ripe fruit is as elaborate as you can get. Ditto for the soft, plush tannins and the wealth of fine, sweet oak. Despite the wealth of blackberry, currant, dark chocolate and cola flavors, it’s not a wine to drink now, because the tannins and acids are so pert. Give it a good six years in the cellar.

Combines firm, ripe layers of black cherry, blackberry, spice and savory notes that are at points rustic and chewy, with touches of black licorice and mineral. Full-bodied and concentrated, ending with a thick, layered finish. Best from 2012 through 2022.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
