Winemaker Notes

Typically Nebbiolo in color, in its finest and fullest expression: intense, faceted ruby red with subtly lighter hues. The impact is immediately appealing, with a very complex bouquet showing decided character and personality, albeit without aggressiveness. Mineral and animal notes enrich its structure and layered complexity, characteristic of the "Bussia" cru; the ensemble is comparable to the intricate power of an orchestra. On the palate, this unique symphony plays on. Traditionally named "The Wine of Kings" – only a king could afford to drink Barolo every day – its magnitude nevertheless does not intimidate and is a gorgeous match with red meat and fowl – yet also with particularly rich fish dishes such as roast turbot! – or with specialty and seasoned cheeses. Best served at 17/19° C., in a very ample glass. In the case of older vintages particularly, it is advisable to decant.

Poderi Colla has produced a big, masculine wine with their 2004 Barolo Bussia Dardi/Le Rose. Huge, brooding aromas of scorched earth, spices and tobacco lead to rich, complex layers of dried figs, plums and prunes that gradually open on the palate. This impressively endowed, exciting Barolo closes with a long, sweet finish, yet it needs a minimum of a few years of bottle age to fully come together. Fermentation takes place in cement, where the wine remains until the Spring, when it is racked into medium and large casks of various sizes. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.

The first Colla winemaker worked in the Langhe hills in 1703. Our own times have witnessed the legendary career of Beppe Colla (born in 1930) who is said to know every vine in every vineyard around Alba, and was one of the founding fathers of the Alba DOCs in the 1960’s. In 1993, Beppe's talented daughter, Federica, joined forces with his younger brother Tino, and founded Poderi Colla. This challenging new venture combined the family heritage of many generations, the long-standing traditions of their terroir, and the future of Alba county’s wine-making. Their synergy brought together three outstanding estates ("poderi") under a single quality hallmark: Poderi Colla. The three properties are Cascine Drago, just outside Alba, Tenuta Roncaglia, in Barbaresco, and Tenuta Dardi Le Rose, in Barolo's prestigious Bussia cru. Today the wines are expertly styled by Beppe and Tino's son Pietro. Total vineyard surface is 64.2 acres.

Responsible for some of the most elegant and age-worthy wines in the world, Nebbiolo, named for the ubiquitous autumnal fog (called nebbia in Italian), is the star variety of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Grown throughout the area, as well as in the neighboring Valle d’Aosta and Valtellina, it reaches its highest potential in the Piedmontese villages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. Outside of Italy, growers are still very much in the experimentation stage but some success has been achieved in parts of California. Somm Secret—If you’re new to Nebbiolo, start with a charming, wallet-friendly, early-drinking Langhe Nebbiolo or Nebbiolo d'Alba.

The center of the production of the world’s most exclusive and age-worthy red wines made from Nebbiolo, the Barolo wine region includes five core townships: La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Serralunga d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto and the Barolo village itself, as well as a few outlying villages. The landscape of Barolo, characterized by prominent and castle-topped hills, is full of history and romance centered on the Nebbiolo grape. Its wines, with the signature “tar and roses” aromas, have a deceptively light garnet color but full presence on the palate and plenty of tannins and acidity. In a well-made Barolo wine, one can expect to find complexity and good evolution with notes of, for example, strawberry, cherry, plum, leather, truffle, anise, fresh and dried herbs, tobacco and violets.

There are two predominant soil types here, which distinguish Barolo from the lesser surrounding areas. Compact and fertile Tortonian sandy marls define the vineyards farthest west and at higher elevations. Typically the Barolo wines coming from this side, from La Morra and Barolo, can be approachable relatively early on in their evolution and represent the “feminine” side of Barolo, often closer in style to Barbaresco with elegant perfume and fresh fruit.

On the eastern side of the Barolo wine region, Helvetian soils of compressed sandstone and chalks are less fertile, producing wines with intense body, power and structured tannins. This more “masculine” style comes from Monforte d’Alba and Serralunga d’Alba. The township of Castiglione Falletto covers a spine with both soil types.

The best Barolo wines need 10-15 years before they are ready to drink, and can further age for several decades.
