Winemaker Notes

"The 2003 Pinot Noir Reserve is the product of an exceptionally challenging hot vintage in which successes were the exception. Somehow The Eyrie Vineyards was able to produce a wine of elegance and grace. The wine was aged entirely in seasoned oak. Light to medium ruby in color, it has an enticing perfume of cherry and raspberry, a silky smooth texture, concentrated flavors, and a lengthy finish. It may lack the depth and richness of a great year but it is a superb effort in the 2003 vintage."
-Wine Advocate

"Unlike many new world Pinots that are over-extracted and heavy, [Eyrie 2003 Reserve Pinot noir] is a lesson in finesse and delicacy with a lithe texture and flavors of herbs, minerals, hibiscus and tart red fruit." Food & Wine: Wine Guide ‘08.

The Eyrie Vineyards was founded by David Lett in 1965. He arrived convinced that the valley would offer Pinot noir its best home outside Burgundy, and planted the region’s first grapes in the modern era.

Jason Lett continues Eyrie’s innovative legacy today, introducing new varieties and creating what the Wine Advocate calls “some of the most fascinating wines on the planet.”

Home of some of the planet’s most amazingly elegant and expressive Pinot noir, the Willamette Valley is a pastoral, mixed landscape of green, bucolic rolling hills, dramatic forestlands and small, independent, friendly wine growers. As a leader in environmental stewardship, the valley has some of the nation’s most protective land use policies, with two-thirds of its vineyards farmed sustainably and over half, organically. While the valley claims a cool, continental climate, and is heavily influenced by the cold, moist winds of the Pacific Ocean, its warm and dry summers allow for the steady, even ripening of Pinot noir.

The potential of Willamette Valley Pinot noir continues to attract the investment of serious growers and winemakers both locally and from abroad, as naturally the finished wines bring accolades from professionals and enthusiasts. With a range of styles from delicate dried cherry, raspberry and hibiscus to stronger notes of truffle, mocha, plum and spice, a fine Willamette Valley Pinot noir is a perfect expression of both character and grace.
