Winemaker Notes

The near-ideal 2000 growing season began with moderate temperatures and rainfall conditions. Bud break proceeded uneventfully through fruit set; the clusters were subsequently ripened by several well-timed heat waves. October's cool temperatures delayed harvest substantially, allowing for fully developed aromatic and flavor characteristics in the grapes.

A superb wine for a range of small appetizer plates from marinated olives and pizzetta to seared scallops. Enjoy with seafood such as oysters on the half-shell, steamed mussels or salt cod brandade or bacalao. Seasoning affinities include toasted nuts, tarragon, fennel bulb and citrus peel.

Blend: 65% Pinot Noirs and 35% Chardonnay

Royal Cuvée has turned into one of the most consistent buys in an upscale California bubbly, mainly due to the elegance that always marks the wine. The 2000, which is a classic blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, shows the smoothness and complexity that mark fine sparkling wine, with subtle citrus, peach, raspberry, brioche and smoky vanilla flavors.

Glimmers of lemon zest and chalk join bright scents of citrus and a rich stratum of autolyzed yeast in the invitingly fresh yet sophisticated aromas displayed by the younger of the two very special cuvee bottlings from Gloria Ferrer. Its small bubbles and vital, frothy mousse carry the wine nicely across the palate and accentuate its rich, creamy character. Its finish is long and appropriately tasty in the austere manner of very fine bubbly.

Gloria Ferrer, California
Gloria Ferrer Gloria Ferrer Winery & Vineyard Winery Image

Gloria Ferrer is the offspring of a powerful parent: Freixenet of Spain, the world's largest producer of sparkling wine. Drawn to the promise of California, Freixenet established a California winery, naming it after the wife of Freixenet's president. The winery in Carneros is one of the best stops in all of Wine Country. Visit the aging caves carved in the hillside and enjoy the sun-splashed deck while noshing on roasted almonds and sipping bubbly. Wines produced are Blanc de Noir, Brut, Brut Rose, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rose.

Representing the topmost expression of a Champagne house, a vintage Champagne is one made from the produce of a single, superior harvest year. Vintage Champagnes account for a mere 5% of total Champagne production and are produced about three times in a decade. Champagne is typically made as a blend of multiple years in order to preserve the house style; these will have non-vintage, or simply, NV on the label. The term, "vintage," as it applies to all wine, simply means a single harvest year.

Known for elegant wines that combine power and finesse, Carneros is set in the rolling hills that straddle the southernmost parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The cooling winds from the abutting San Pablo Bay, combined with lots of midday California sunshine, create an ideal environment for producing wines with a perfect balance of crisp acidity and well-ripened fruit.

This cooler pocket of California lends itself to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Carneros is an important source of sparkling wines made in the style of Champagne as well.
