    Alcohol By Volume: 14.0%

    Alcohol By Volume Guide

    • 10%
    • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

    Winemaker's Notes

181 is classic Bordeaux-style Merlot, elegantly opening with aromas of black cherry, vanilla and toasty spice. Fresh fruit flavors of black cherry compote and red currant fuse seamlessly with spicy cedar and vanilla. The finish is lingering and luxurious. With balanced tannins and acidity, this medium bodied wine is a perfect companion to oven-roasted turkey, pork dumplings or a light green salad with Roquefort and pear.

    Learn About 181

The 181 Merlot clone traces its origins to Pomerol in Bordeaux, where it is highly valued due to its suitability to the red clay soils of the region. Clay soil retains water well and stays cool longer in spring, thus delaying bud break which is a desired outcome for Merlot. The red soils of our Clay Station Vineyard in Lodi are similar to the red soils in Pomerol, making 181 the perfect clone to grow rich, luscious Merlot.

But passionate Merlot producers, and of course the right bank of Bordeaux, continued to produce quality versions of this grape. Merlot remains the principle grape of top chateaux in St...
