02. Selecting Wine - How do I choose the right wines?
If you are not quite ready to place your order and are wondering what wine selection would be best for you or for a gift recipient, we have an entire section of the Wine.com site that is dedicated to helping customers learn about wine.
To get started, please visit Wine.com > Wine Basics Here you can learn about...
- how to select a great wine - pairing wine with food (plus dozens of great recipes!) - types of wine and various wine-growing regions - wine tasting and stemware ...and much more!
03. Price variations and product availability - Why do price and stock differ by state?
Many states have laws prohibiting retail shipments of alcohol over state lines, and in some states Wine.com must purchase our stock from in-state wholesalers and ship from an in-state warehouse. As a result, we are subject to the pricing and availability of these local wholesalers, which may affect the retail price and search results when placing orders shipped to these states. To be sure of seeing correct pricing and availability when shopping at Wine.com, please be sure to choose your shipping destination from the "SHIP TO" pull-down menu before you begin shopping. This step will ensure you are finding wines and pricing applicable to the location to which you will ship your purchase. If you change your shipping state after you begin shopping, items in your shopping cart may change price or be removed by our system.
04. Icons and ratings - What do the wine.com product icons and ratings mean?
A key to the icons, abbreviations and numbers that appear below the names of wines on Wine.com pages can be seen by clicking on any of these icons. For our ratings icons, the number indicates the rating given to the wine by a wine publication, and the abbreviation to the left of the number indicates which publication gave that rating. To learn more about these ratings and what they mean, please visit Wine.com > Wine Basics > Ratings Explained The wine type icons represent: - The wine glass in a colored square indicates the kind of wine: red, white, bubbly, etc. - The present in the red square indicates its a great wine gift - The dollar sign in the red square indicates it is a collectible wine - The gray square with a swirl indicates a screw-cap closure - The blue square with the letter "K" indicates a kosher product - The scripted "B" in the green square indicates wines made in limited quantities - The green square with a grape bunch indicates wines that use sustainable, organic and/or biodynamic practices in the vineyard and/or winemaking process.
05. Promotion Codes - How do I redeem a promotion code?
To redeem a promotion code on a Wine.com order, enter the promotion code in the field provided just below the list of items you've ordered in your Shopping Cart. Once you've entered the code, click the "Update Cart" button near the bottom of that same page to see the impact on your order total.
After hitting the "Update Cart" button, if you do not see an immediate discount, please double check the requirements of the code. The discount will not apply if the specific promotion terms and conditions are not met. Note: Some specially priced items may be ineligible for additional discounts, and will include on their description a note indicating the ineligibility of the item. Only one promotion code can be used per order.
06. Gift Messaging - How do I include a gift message with my order?
The wine.com shopping cart is made up of several sections (or web pages) for you to complete in order to ensure a complete and accurate order.
After you load your shopping cart with the items you wish to send, and after you enter both the billing information and the shipping information, you will be prompted to enter a gift message. The gift message is limited to 250 characters, including all spaces and punctuation. Gift messages are printed on a stylized portion of our packing list that folds over into a gift card, decorated on the front with a gift box image and the words "A Gift Message For You." When the recipient lifts this fold, the gift message is visible.
When a gift message is included on your order, the packing slip will not include any pricing information.
07. Multiple addresses - How do I place an order shipping to several locations?
It is not possible to create a single order with multiple ship-to addresses in the Wine.com Shopping Cart. But if you're ordering the same products to multiple addresses, we have a time-saving shortcut: Once your first order to a single recipient is complete, on the Order Confirmation page (where you see your Order Number), look for the large graphic that says "Send another?" in big red letters. Clicking this graphic will take you back to a Shopping Cart that includes all the products from your first order, and your credit card information. You can then create a duplicate order in about 30 seconds just by completing the Shipping Information and Gift Options stages of the checkout process.
If your additional shipping locations are in different states than the first, please be aware that availability and pricing may vary, as we ship from different warehouses for some states in order to comply with interstate commerce laws regarding alcohol.
08. Gift Certificates - How do I buy gift certificates?
Gift certificates are available in denominations of $25, $50, $75, $100, $200, $250 and $500. If you select the Printed Gift Card option, the Gift Certificate will be sent via US Postal Service and will arrive 5-7 business days from the date of purchase. If you select the Online E-card option, your gift message, the gift certificate dollar amount and code will be sent in email form to the email address specified in your order within 24 hours after your purchase. Additionally, a printed copy will be mailed to the recipient address. You will also be sent a copy, by email, of the message sent to the Gift Certificate recipient. To redeem a Wine.com gift certificate, enter the gift certificate number on the Billing Information screen during the checkout process. Once you enter your gift certificate code, the full value of the gift certificate will be credited to your Wine.com account. You will not need to enter the gift certificate number for future purchases. Only one gift certificate may be redeemed per purchase. Please note that you will still need to enter your credit card information, even if your gift certificate covers the full amount of your order. As long as the value of your gift certificate exceeds the price of the product you are purchasing, no charge will be made to your credit card.
10. Vintage Substitution - What does the SUBSTITUTE VINTAGE box in the cart mean?
On rare occasions. a chosen vintage of a wine will sell out or be replaced by a new release after your order is placed. In such cases, Wine.com will substitute with a comparable vintage.
If you would rather be notified if your chosen vintage is unavailable you can select "no" in the "vintage substitution" box in your shopping cart. In these instances, if a vintage sells out unexpectedly, we will hold your order and email you to see how you would like to proceed.
If you select "yes" in "vintage substitution" box in your shopping cart, then if the vintage sells out unexpectedly, we will automatically substitute the wine with the next available vintage and ship your order. With bottles of wine under $15, we will not hold up an order and will automatically substitute a comparable vintage on wines under $15.
Please be assured we do not substitute with a different type, varietal or winery. We will only substitute a new vinatge for the same type, varietal and winery.
11. Sulfites - Do all wines contain Sulfites?
Nearly all wines now sport the label "Contain Sulfites," a mandated warning statement. Potassium metabisulfite - sulfite for short - is added to wine and other foods to protect against oxidation, discoloration, and microbial spoilage. Without sulfites, few wines would last much more than a year in the bottle. Two critical points to understanding the use of sulfites in wine: First, fermentation yeasts make some sulfites all by themselves, as do almost all living creatures. As such, all wines have some sulfites in them. Second, most winemakers have added additional sulfites to their wine for ages. In ancient times, sulfur was burned in the storage vessels, producing sulfites which dissolved into the wine with the same advantageous effects still sought today using more modern methods. Many food items contain much higher concentrations of sulfites than you would find in wine. While some people are sensitive to sulfites in high concentrations (as in dried fruits), it is unlikely that these same people would suffer ill effects from small quantities of sulfites in wine.
12. Screw caps - Why they're now common (and beneficial)
Screw-cap closures are becoming more and more common in the wine industry. In fact, for many kinds of quality wine, screw caps are now preferred. For these wines, their makers have found that a screw-cap closure better preserves the fresh fruit flavors of wine and eliminates the risk of a "tainted" cork ruining the whole bottle. Screw caps are commonly used for wines throughout Europe (although some wineries cork the same wines for U.S. markets because of a perceived stigma) and this kind of enclosure provides a stronger seal for better quality control and more consistent aging. Industry experts predict that within 5 years, more than 75% of wines sold in the U.S. will be in screw-cap bottles.
