Wine.com offers many green wines that use sustainable, organic and/or biodynamic practices in the vineyard and/or winemaking process. We rely on a number of U.S. and International certifications to qualify wines green. Learn more with our green wine infographic.
In the Warehouses
The Berkeley Warehouse has made constant efforts (over many years) to reduce waste and improve sustainable packaging.
- 2009 - Gift packaging became greener with less packaging material for gift sets
- 2010 - We added biodegradable air bags to our packaging rounding off our assortment to be even greener
- 2011 - Purchased fuel efficient transportation with a Ford E350 CNG. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles use GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) for measuring fuel thereby reducing carbon emissions and increasing cash savings. "$44 to fill it up this morning vs. the usual $120 we had been paying." - Berkeley Warehouse Manager
In the Office
- Replaced trucked-in water with water filter (removes 107 lbs of carbon emissions/year)
- Recycle used batteries (decrease chemical leaching in groundwater)
- Employees maintain beautifying and oxygenating plants
- Recycle toner cartridges
- Added ceramic plates, silverware and compostable utensils to our kitchens to replace disposable paper plates and plasticware
- Lunch time group discussions to raise awareness. Topics have included:
- Energy savings, featuring guest speaker Jeffrey Liang of Ecology Action
- Recycling, featuring guest speaker Belén Banzon, Director of Recycling Facilitation & LEED Audits from Biagini Waste Reduction Systems, Inc
- The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, aka the Plastic Gyre, featuring guest speaker Doug Woodring, one of the founders of Project Kaisei
- Corporate sustainability, featuring guest speaker Adam Wiskind, graduate of Presidio School of Management
- Both San Francisco and Berkeley offices now have bee hives
Fundraisers have been ongoing at the San Francisco office by selling sample wines to employees and using the funds to support charitable efforts. For example:
- During the holiday season, proceeds from those sales buy toys for Toys-for-Tots that are given to the S.F. Fire Department.
- On March 28, 2011, Wine.com employees raised $450, which was then doubled by Brookstone to donate to Save the Children helping Tsunami victims in Japan.
In the Community
Alice Griffith Community Garden
On Friday August 17, 2012, 25 Wine.com employees got down and dirty weeding, tilling and mowing the lawn at this lovely community garden in Bayview-Hunter's Point in San Francisco. This 3-acre plot has been managed by only two volunteers since 2003, where all the produce grown is free for anyone who wants it. It was an afternoon of synergy between a great company and a great cause ultimately benefiting the San Francisco community.
Alameda County Community Food Bank
On Friday March 16, 2012, 45 Wine.com employees sorted through 19 thousand pounds of donated food, which was guaranteed to be delivered to needy families in the following two days. One of six people living in Alameda County goes hungry. The Alameda County Community Food Bank's mission is to alleviate hunger by providing nutritious food and nutrition education to people in need. It was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
On Friday May 13, 2011, 35 Wine.com employees descended on San Francisco's Family House and were armed with brushes and rollers to paint a massive 3 story bannister, which badly needed weatherproofing. Wine.com also helped to re-stock the kitchen cupboards with donated food from the community. Family House provides temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital. It was a great team-bonding afternoon which was appreciated by Family House and the families they served.
Rosa Parks Elementary
In August of 2009, Wine.com employees took to the books...this time at Rosa Parks Elementary School in Berkeley, CA. Over 40 employees spent a warm Friday afternoon organizing, cleaning, shuffling, alphabetizing, raking, wiping, planting, and more, in preparation for the students entering the new school year. The principal and teachers needed help getting their classrooms and school yard beautified and Wine.com employees were eager to help. When it was all said and done, the teachers and parents gave Wine.com a big round of applause at the next PTA meeting. It was the least we can do for the children of the Berkeley community!
Ocean Beach cleanup
On Friday, March 19, 2010, over 30 Wine.com employees removed over 400 pounds of trash from the beach. Seeing all the trash we picked up, beach goers showed their appreciation with a few "Thank Yous" and marine life give their thanks as well. Vegetation management in the Presidio
On May 8, 2009, Wine.com participated in its inaugural Community Impact Day at Golden Gate National Park. The activity was held at the Presidio fields and required the team of 45 to pull invasive weeds from the ground to give the natural flora a chance to thrive. For this one afternoon, Golden Gate park rangers were very appreciative of the Wine.com energy doing a job that normally takes 5 park employees to accomplish in weeks.
