Weekend Movie Blend
Back to the Future and Big House Red

Think of the silver DeLorean as the screw cap of time machines (both have sleek metal skins, after all) and you'll see why we've chosen Back to the Future to pair with Bonny Doon's tasty and screw-capped Big House Red.

Back to the Future was released in July of 1985 and became the hit of the year, hauling in over $210 million at the boxoffice. Michael J. Fox was a smash as Marty McFly, the high schooler who accidentally goes back in time to 1955 in a souped-up DeLorean built by his wild-haired friend Doc Brown. The DeLorean crashes and then things get even worse: Marty's teenaged mother falls for time-travelling Marty instead of for his future dad.

Back to the Future was followed by two sequels, a TV cartoon series, a theme park ride and heaven knows what else, so it's easy to forget how fresh, funny and inventive the original film really was. Sure, some of the 1985 references are dated now -- Calvin Klein underwear jokes, Van Halen tunes, Fox's "cool" down vest -- but on the other hand, skateboarding is bigger than ever. And bullies, nerds, cute high school girls and Chuck Berry are timeless. Besides, who doesn't enjoy a juicy bit of time travel?

You could say that wine is its own juicy time machine, taking us on exotic trips back to 1995 or '85 (or '55) and into the future as we stash new cases in the cellar. Bonny Doon winemaker Randall Grahm has a bit of Doc Brown in him, blending up some of the most fascinating wines around and having a whale of a time doing it. (See our interview with him this week.) His Big House Red is a blend of "pan-Mediterranean varieties," including Syrah, Barbera, Carignane and Malbec. Fresh, fun and a little mind-bending, it's the perfect wine to take for a Saturday-night spin with Back to the Future.

And if you squint at the label just a little bit, you can pretend you see Michael J. Fox making a getaway in his souped-up DeLorean.

Kosher wine
Kosher
A Kosher wine begins like every other - as grapes on a vine. Once they reach the winery for crushing, the wine is under strict rabbinal supervision.
Screw Cap wine
Screw Cap
Many studies report and winemakers agree that screw caps protect wine better and preserve its flavor more effectively than cork. More importantly, screw caps eliminate cork taint caused by TCA, a compound which develops in a small percentage of corks and ruins the taste of wine.
Green wine
Green Wines
Wines that use sustainable, organic and/or biodynamic practices in the vineyard and/or winemaking process. We rely on a number of U.S. and International certifications to qualify wines "green."
Collectible wine
Collectible
These wines will improve from additional bottle age, when properly stored, and may show the greatest potential to increase in value.
Great Wine Gifts
Great Wine Gifts
These selected wines make impressionable gifts for wine enthusiasts and oenophiles alike.
Boutique Wines
Boutique Wines
These wines are made in limited quantities and are typically produced from single vineyard sources or made by small, artisanal wineries. While the winery may produce larger quantities, we limit wines with this designation to a 1,000 case production.
