Winemaker Notes

Cabernet Sauvignon was a standout from d'Arenberg's 2006 vintage, as flavors developed at a lower than normal baume giving complexity and depth to the flavor profile. The aromas are classic Cabernet with exotic dark plum, fragrant casis and an underlying mix of dark chocolate, cherries, cured meats and spiced violets. The palate has an impressive elegance, a wonderful juicy mid-palate and great richness. Immense structure and length with mineral acidity and fine lacy tannins directing the fruit.

It's tempting to pick apart the elements of this blend-the curranty ripeness of cabernet sauvignon, the silken plumminess of merlot, the blackness of petit verdot and the green tobacco scents of franc. The wine combines all those elements in a richly textured red with the fresh scent of a eucalyptus grove. More restrained in its ripeness than d'Arenberg's McLaren Vale wines, this still delivers substantial flavors. Decant it for a thick-cut sirloin, grilled rare.

The 2006 The Galvo Garage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot which spent 10-12 months in seasoned French and American oak. Opaque purple-colored, it presents aromas of cedar, spice box, black currant and blackberry. Structured, dense, and savory, this firm effort will evolve for 2-3 years and offer prime drinking from 2012 to 2021.

d'Arenberg, Australia
d'Arenberg Adelaide Hills Winery Image

d'Arenberg is one of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and other Rhone varieties that have historically defined the region. A century on, their vineyards have grown to some 450 acres in McLaren Vale, including Shiraz dating back to d'Arenberg's first plantings in 1912, and nearly one-third of McLaren Vale's old bush-vine Grenache. Fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family's vineyards to organics and biodynamics and moved to solar energy in the winery. All the while, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed--all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches, leading to an impressive array of bottlings every year, each showing a different facet of McLaren Vale terroir. Having been inducted into Wine & Spirits Magazine's Hall of Fame for earning a place on its Top 100 Wineries nine times, this accolade is a reflection of d'Arenberg's revered reputation worldwide.
