Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

The wine's appearance has a very deep dark, garnet color suggests a powerful full-bodied wine. The aromas are dominated with an exotic array of classical cabernet characteristics; blackcurrants, dark earthy cassis notes, and an underlying mix of dark chocolate and green runner-bean minerality. As the wine opens there is a perfumed/herbal plum flavor apparent with cherry, prune, mulberry, violets and spice notes with fine cedar oak note.

The palate is ripe, complex and has an impressive elegance upon entry. There's plenty of structure and richness of fruit with a mix of fine fruit and oak tannins and that leads to a lovely fragrant dark chocolate, minerally dry finish. The mid palate and finish is excellent and clearly show great drinkability and lightness for such a complex wine.

Cab Sauvignon (82%)/ Merlot (6%)/ Cab Franc (6%)/ Petit Verdot (6%)

The 2005 The Galvo Garage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Opaque purple-colored, it presents aromas of cedar, spice box, mineral, cassis, and black cherry. Structured, dense, and savory, this firm effort will evolve for several years and offer food for thought from 2012 to 2025.

At 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, with small amounts of Merlot, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot, this drinks like a Cab, combining ripe cassis and chocolate notes with hints of mint, brown sugar and cinnamon. It’s full-bodied and a bit chewy in texture, which should serve it well through at least 2015.

d'Arenberg, Australia
d'Arenberg Adelaide Hills Winery Image

d'Arenberg is one of the undisputed kings of Australian Shiraz and other Rhone varieties that have historically defined the region. A century on, their vineyards have grown to some 450 acres in McLaren Vale, including Shiraz dating back to d'Arenberg's first plantings in 1912, and nearly one-third of McLaren Vale's old bush-vine Grenache. Fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family's vineyards to organics and biodynamics and moved to solar energy in the winery. All the while, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed--all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches, leading to an impressive array of bottlings every year, each showing a different facet of McLaren Vale terroir. Having been inducted into Wine & Spirits Magazine's Hall of Fame for earning a place on its Top 100 Wineries nine times, this accolade is a reflection of d'Arenberg's revered reputation worldwide.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Known for opulent red wines with intense power and concentration, McLaren Vale is home to perhaps the most “classic” style of Australian Shiraz. Vinified on its own or in Rhône Blends, these hot-climate wines are deeply colored and high in extract with signature hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is also produced in a similar style.

Whites, often made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc tend to be opulent and full of tropical, stone and citrus fruit.
