Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2005
Viognier
from Barossa Valley, Australia
winemaker's notes:
Golden in color, the Yalumba Viognier is an enchanting wine with aromas of lemon and honeysuckle with hints of spice. The palate is rich, luscious and silky with juicy tropical fruit, citrus and lychee. These exotic flavours are intensified when paired with food - try with lightly spiced Asian dishes such as stir-fry noodles or a green chicken curry.
"An undeniable bargain." The exotic apricot, peach, and litchi nut-scented and flavored 2005 Viognier possesses enough zesty acidity to provide balance and freshness to its flamboyant style." - The Wine Advocate"
"...Tangy and bright in the mouth, the citrus flavors precise but also nicely filled in, with a note of dried peach lingering through the powerful, spicy finish. Another outstanding example of this variety at a remarkable price from this Australian viognier pioneer."
-International Wine Cellar
"Sunny, summery pretty: While this wine is almost always a good value, it's particularly good this vintage. Honeysuckle, melon, pear and other stone fruit flavors are delivered in a medium-sized package; the wine is pretty complex too, especially considering its price point. A house pour for this summer if ever there was one."
- Wine Enthusiast
Throughout its history, Yalumba has been willing to take a risk and back its judgement on a new variety, a new style, or a new direction, without losing sight of traditional strengths. Nowhere is this more evident than in the winery's pioneering work in Australia with the rare and alluring Rhône grape variety, Viognier.

Although I found this to be a good wine with nice citrus-like flavors, its "fruitiness" was somewhat muted compared to other Viogniers I've sampled. It did complement Thai cuisine very nicely.

Did I get a bad bottle? the reviews have been so favorable. I was very disappointed. Not that it was actually "bad" or "cheap" but this voignier had no structure, and was more plain in its fruitiness than it should have been. I've found some wonderful wines at low prices among Wine.Com's recommendations; this one let me down!

My new favorite summer wine. Price can't be beat - especially when you buy by the case!
