Alcohol By Volume: 14.3%
Alcohol By Volume Guide
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
Coffee mocha and ripe wild blackberries dominate the nose of this masculine wine. Racy cherry/berry flavors and rich fat tannins fill your mouth, along with Shiitake mushrooms in the finish. The newer clonal plantings from this ranch were bulked out due to smoke taint, but the remaining lots have added an enormous amount of depth and complexity to this wine. The extracted tannin will soften with several years of patience in your cellar.
"A little bit more direct than the other highly rated Pinots from Williams Selyem, this one is generously fruited and very rich with both suppleness and a touch of silk that carry it across the palate. Its style might tempt early drinking, but the very long finish and good balance will earn it a place in the cellar for a half decade's rest. Of course, if you want to drink one wine from this special group, this one might be it if only because it is so delightfully deep even now."
"Ruby-red. Exotic, highly perfumed scents of black raspberry, potpourri, patchouli, cola and licorice, plus a hint of smoky herbs. A rich and surprisingly firm and juicy midweight, with creamy-sweet red and dark berry flavors leavened by subtle minerality that runs through the wine. Gains in power with air and finishes with serious thrust, grip and length. This is the most masculine pinot in this year's lineup.

The northernmost California winegrowing regions, these two counties are right above Napa and Sonoma, geographically. Yet, wine-wise they are very different - both from their southern neighbors and from each other.
