Westrey's first estate vineyard, Oracle is located in the Dundee Hills AVA, just north of Abbey Ridge Vineyard. Situated at an average elevation of 650 feet, the rows face due south on predominantly Jory soil, with a narrow streak of Nekia running through the property. The 2007 blend consists of 24% 30-year-old Pommard clone Pinot Noir (own-rooted), 70% Dijon clone 777 on Riparia rootstock (100% free-run form two separate lots) and 6% Dijon clone 115, also on Riparia. With our 2001 planting in full production, coupled with the strong return of the old vine block, Oracle is now firmly entrenched in our winery. All lots were fermented with indigenous yeast in open-top 1,500-liter fermentors. The wine shows aromas of raspberry fruit, red currents, violets and mineral-earth notes. On the palate the wine explodes with berry fruit, exhibits good weight and a balanced acid structure. This seventeen-barrel lot had five new barrels, with the balance in neutral wood. After an indigenous malo-lactic fermentation, it was racked with inert gas in the spring, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered in September of 2008. 421 cases & 7 cases of magnums produced.
"If the Justice is the most complex wine of the group, then this is the most elegant with impressively pure red pinot, raspberry and a hint of plum aromas that slide gracefully into round and relatively silky flavors that possess a smooth texture and relatively firm acidity on the solidly long finish.
Co-winemakers, Amy Wesselman and David Autrey founded Westrey Wine Company in 1993. In addition to wide experience with various wineries in Oregon, they have also worked for Domaines de l'Arlot and Dujac. The wines consistently evidence real purity of expression and there is very little, indeed often no, overt oak influence. Retail prices are generally in the $20 to $30 range and I believe the wines represent fine comparative value for the money."
