winemaker's notes:

This is Westrey's fifth release from the Justice Vineyard. Justice is located in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA next to Bethel Heights Vineyard. Situated at 600 feet, the rows face due South on Nekia soil. Our two acres of densely planted Pinot from Justice consist of 50% Dijon 667 on Riparia and 50% Dijon 777 on Riparia. These blocks yielded only 1.88 tons per acre from this vintage. Because of the exceptional ripeness of the 2008 vintage, the blend consists of 31% whole cluster. The nose presents very approachable aromas of raspberry and blueberry fruit, earth and a hint of a floral note. The palate shows bright berry fruit, good weight and a wonderful sense of balance that seems to be characteristic of the vintage. This ten-barrel lot had three new barrels, one one-year-old barrel with the balance in neutral wood. It was racked once in the spring with inert gas after an indigenous malo-lactic and was bottled unfined and unfiltered in September of 2008. 315 cases & 7 cases of magnums produced.

alcohol by volume: 13.5%
critical acclaim:

"A beautifully complex nose offers up aromas of deep cherry, briar, spice hints and obvious earth nuances that complement well the layered, balanced, intense and dusty-textured middle weight flavors that deliver fine depth and length. I like this as it's soil-inflected from stem to stern; moreover, it should reward from 4 to 6 years of cellar time.

Co-winemakers, Amy Wesselman and David Autrey founded Westrey Wine Company in 1993. In addition to wide experience with various wineries in Oregon, they have also worked for Domaines de l'Arlot and Dujac. The wines consistently evidence real purity of expression and there is very little, indeed often no, overt oak influence. Retail prices are generally in the $20 to $30 range and I believe the wines represent fine comparative value for the money."

"Dark red with a bright rim. Powerfully scented bouquet of black raspberry, cherry-cola, black tea and violet. More tangy red berry notes add lift to the darker fruits on the palate, with hints of sassafras and musky herbs adding complexity. Offers an attractive combination of energy and depth and finishes with excellent clarity and length, and an echo of rooty sassafras. Definitely give this one some bottle aging or an hour in a decanter.
