Winemaker Notes

"The opaque purple 2005 Shiraz was aged for 9-12 months in a mix of new and used American hogsheads. It offers a multi-dimensional perfume of cedar, tobacco, plum, anise, blueberry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, stacked and packed, this mouth-filling Shiraz has enough structure to evolve for several years but delaying gratification will prove difficult. A barrel sample of the 2006 (which should be in the bottle prior to publication) appears to be equally good. Congratulations to Water Wheel for over-delivering on a superb quartet of wine values." - Wine Advocate

Water Wheel, Australia
Water Wheel Winery Image
The present Water Wheel operation is the brainchild of Peter Cumming whose family have long been established as successful growers of tomatoes and cherries around Bridgewater-on-Loddon to the north-west of Bendigo in central Victoria. Peter studied winemaking at Roseworthy, and after a few excellent years as winemaker for Hickinbotham at the old Anakie vineyard near Geelong, threw himself boots and all into the Water Wheel business. His driving ambition as a relatively inexperienced winemaker was to capture as much flavor on the palate of his wines as he possibly could, precisely the edge that Water Wheel still retains over so many of its competitors.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
