Winemaker's Notes

Superb stuff - generous and lively, characterized by blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, with a white pepper finish. Our 2001 Napa Valley Syrah is reflective of meticulous vineyard care, a perfect vintage, and careful handling in the cellar. The wine displays a deep red color and exhibits aromas of blackberries, cherries, plums and licorice. The fruit notes are boosted by the inclusion of 2% Viognier. On the palate the concentrated flavors of wild blackberry, anise and sweet vanilla are wrapped in supple tannins for a mouth filling and lingering wine. While these soft tannins allow for immediate enjoyment, this wine will gain complexity over the next 5 to 10 years with proper cellaring.

Learn About Voss Vineyards

In 1994, Voss Vineyards was conceived and founded by Australian vigneron, Robert Hill-Smith, proprietor of Nautilus Estate in Marlborough, New Zealand, and Australia’s oldest family owned winery, Yalumba, in the Barossa Valley. Robert was intrigued by the Napa Valley and saw quality and opportunity in the viticulture around Rutherford and Oakville, wondering whether he could apply some of the knowledge garnered over the 150 years of family involvement in winemaking. Voss owns 42 vineyard acres in Rutherford and produces Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Syrah.

The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

The home base of Syrah is the Northern Rhone, where it creates the exclusive wines of Hermitage and Cote Rotie. On the less pricy side, the Rhone makes Syrah-based wines in Crozes...
