Alcohol By Volume: 14.8%
Alcohol By Volume Guide
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
Intensely hued in color, the 2005 vintage is deeply purple with garnet hued highlights. A slightly higher acidity and lower pH further add brightness and depth. On the nose, aromas of violets hint at the elegance of this wine while rich red fruits, chocolate and smoke tell of its power. Just as stunning on the palate, fresh plums and dried strawberries intermix with tobacco, black pepper and black licorice in this multi-dimensional wine.
"The east-facing hillside Vineyard 29 turns out superb Cabernet Sauvignon, but again there is not much of it. While the Cru negociant Cabernet Sauvignon represents 3,000 cases, there are just under 700 cases of the estate Vineyard 29 Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2005, a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc, is superb. Notes of lead pencil shavings intermixed with smoky cassis and black cherries, a hint of white chocolate, and cedar are all present in this wine, which spent 17 months in French oak. Beautiful texture, medium to full body, and a totally seamless personality make for a gorgeous wine to drink now or cellar for 15 or more years. "
The Wine Advocate
"Good ruby-red. Claret-like aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, minerals, menthol and flowers, with some redder fruit notes emerging with aeration. Sweet, lush and deep, with harmonious acidity framing and intensifying the flavors of dark fruits, mocha, minerals and mint. Pliant, sweet and long on personality. Finishes with serious but fully ripe tannins, excellent breadth and enticing minerality. This is a rich, full style: the lots in 2005 macerated up to 45 days, compared to a more normal 30 days in past vintages."
