Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

All Vavasour wines are pure expressions of their varietal designation and the singular terroir of our estate vineyard. This 2010 Pinot is high toned, open and spicy with intense aromatics and layers of ripe juicy fruit flavors, strawberries and cherries. There is also an underlying stratum of vanilla from 11 months of aging in French oak. The tannins are soft and silky and the finish is impressively long.

Critical Acclaim

"Strawberry and black cherry flavors are supple and expressive, with highlights of citrus peel, rose water and spice box weaving in and out. Drink now through 2022."
87 Points

"Drawn from the Awatere Valley subregion, this is a chunky, full-bodied Pinot Noir. Oak is prominent, in the form of toast, vanilla and graham cracker notes, while the fruit is grapy. This wine shows decent length; the finish is cushioned by soft tannins and is pointed up by tart acids."
87 Points

"Good full, bright red. Aromas of plum, currant, licorice and spices show a slightly dull, roasted quality. Supple and spicy in the mouth, offering good sweetness... Finishes with dusty tannins and lingering sweetness."
