Alcohol By Volume: 15.7%

Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Sourced primarily from 10 to 15 year-old estate vines, the Embruix (pronounced "Embroosh") de Vall Llach is Catalan for "bewitching." True to its name, the wine has an enchanting ruby-red color and captivating aromas of fresh blueberries, dark minerals, ripe plums and mulling spices. On the palate the wine is surprisingly complex and full-bodied, with soft tannins and a hint of sweet fennel expressed in the finish. Meant to consume now or age for 20-25 years, this wine should be served between 58-60ºF.

30% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 10% Syrah.

Critical Acclaim

"Celler Vall-Llach and the wine's importer have wisely decreased the price of the entry-level 2007 Embruix de Vall-Llach to the point that it is one of Priorat's best values. Made from the estate's younger vines, it is a blend of 30% Garnacha, 30% Carinena, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance Merlot and Syrah. Fifty percent of the wine was barrel-fermented and all of it was aged for 16 months in 225 and 300-liter seasoned French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it offers up an enticing bouquet of underbrush, damp earth, mineral, incense, black currant and black cherry. This is followed by a full-bodied, dense, savory wine with layers of spicy fruit and a lengthy, pure finish. It can be enjoyed now but will benefit from 1-2 years of additional cellaring. "
91 Points

"Chunky, fruity and softer than many Priorat wines. There's raisin, blackberry and prune on the nose, which is followed by a grippy, round palate with sweet blackberry, raisin and chocolate flavors. Fleshy and easy on the finish, with coconut and warmth. Drink now through 2014."

Learn About Priorat

(pree-ohr-aht) The Catalans call it Priorat, most others in Spain say Priorato - however you choose to pronounce it, it's easy to see it has been an up-and-coming region for Spain, sparking envy among collectors. The region has become something of a cult wine producer, creating wines that cost up to 5 times that of a quality Rioja. The region has a special soil, called...

Other Red Red wines are certainly not limited to Cabernet and Pinot Noir - or even Nebbiolo and Grenache. There are a multitude of grape varieties throughout the world, however, in a Darwinian sense, survival of the fittest only brings us wines made from grapes that can adapt to changing climates and winemaking techniques. Notable Facts Our other red wines primarily consists of...
