Winemaker's Notes

Madonna del Piano is the first single-vineyard in Montalcino. Valdicava makes some of the most intense, richly flavored Brunello's coming out of Montalcino today. Their philosophy is to work more in the vineyards to respect the balance of the place. The winery likes to produce a Brunello that represents the best tradition in structure and aromatics with more elegance, harmony and fruit.

Critical Acclaim

"The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a super-ripe, opulent wine that resembles the 1997 in its generous, full-bodied personality. The tannins are surprisingly well-balanced within the context of this challenging vintage. The 2003 should drink well relatively early for this Riserva. All things considered, this is a superb effort. Production was down sharply in 2003. The estate bottled just 13,000 bottles of this wine compared to the typical 23,000 bottles. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2023."

At our precise latitude of 43 degrees, the warmth of the nearby Tirrean Sea, the protective barrier of the Monte Amiata, the coolness of the wooded areas, the breeze and the moderate rainfall all coincide to facilitate the growth of these grapes to fragrant, full maturity. Valdicava is located in the Montosoli area which is...

Learn About Sangiovese

Sangiovese (SAHN-gee-oh-VAY-zee) Blood of Jove (literally translated) The principal grape of Chianti - in fact, the principle grape of all of Tuscany - has had its ups and downs. For a stint in the 70s and 80s, wines labeled Chianti contained cheap red wine packaged in a straw casked bottle, most popular for the candle holder it would become. But no more. Sangiovese re...
