Two Hands Sophie's Garden Shiraz 2005
Syrah/Shiraz from South Australia, Australia
The Garden Series is a Super Premium range of six Shiraz from six of the finest Shiraz producing regions in Australia. Sophie's Garden reflects the unique terroir of Padthaway.
Almost black at the core with a purple rim.
Aromatic bouquet that resonates with cooler climate tones of aromatic spice and mint.
Behind the perfumed aromatic fruit aromas and clove, pepper spice is a powerful intense wine, rich and full bodied. Grainy but fine tannins mingle with the rich plum and blackberry fruit characters.
Australian Wine Companion - "Very dense, deep colour; much the most dense and rich wine in the group, achieved at least in part through higher alcohol; US, here we come."
International Wine Cellar - "Inky violet. Exotically perfumed nose combines vibrant red and dark berry aromas with smoked meat, graphite and dried flowers. On the palate, this strongly channels the northern Rhone, with juicy blackcurrant and cured meat flavors braced by zesty minerality. Gains in depth and sweetness on the back, where the mineral and meat qualities persist. Very complex stuff."
Wine Spectator - "Broad and generous, with dense, dark cherry and plum flavors shaded by mineral and a touch of earth. Yet the frame seems to melt away, leaving the flavors hovering in midair. An enticing red that will benefit from cellaring. Best after 2008. 793 cases made."
The Wine Advocate - "The 2005 Shiraz "Sophia’s Garden," sourced from Padthaway, gives up notes of clove, soy, leather, pepper, and blackberry. It is the most tannic of the Garden Series and somewhat muted. Perhaps 6-8 years in the cellar will allow the wine to blossom but that is a gamble. "

About AustraliaLike the United States, which is about the same size, Australia's winemaking regions are huddled into one or two pockets of the country. The state of South Australia, which produces about 60% of the country's wine, also has the most wineries and sub-regions, including McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Barossa Valley. New South Wales is home to the Hunter Valley, while the smaller, southern state of Victoria is best known for theYarra Valley. Head way west to the very large state of Western Australia and you'll find the tiny region of Margaret River at the southern tip.

Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
