Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Above the fog line at 1,500 feet, this is an incredibly beautiful, yet stressed vineyard that produces trademark Mt Veeder characteristics. Dried cherry, dried herb, briar patch, tobacco and black tea aromas are matched with cassis and wild cherry flavors. This is an approachable mountain cabernet with balanced tannins and a lingering finish.

The similarly colored 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Cloud's Nest Vineyard is from Mt. Veeder, a complicated mountain site of many diverse terroirs, but with the best parcels having fabulous potential. More black raspberry, blueberry and floral notes along with hints of background oak and roasted coffee emerge from this 2008. Slightly more seamless than its two predecessors, this opulent wine displays layers and layers of fruit and a rich, powerful finish with no hard edges. There is plenty of tannin, but the luxurious fruit levels conceal most of the tannin. This wine should drink well for 15-20 years.

Offers complexity, balance, texture and finesse, with dried dark berry, roasted herb, mineral and loamy earth flavors, with a final push of currant and raspberry, mixed with a splash of espresso. Best from 2012 through 2021. 550 cases made.

Dry, tough and gritty. The main issue is the tannins, which are hard as nails, and coat the mouth with sandpapery astringency. Yet underneath is a solid core of blackberry fruit. Classically old style Mount Veeder, this Cabernet wants a good six years in the cellar, and it could develop for far longer.

Trinchero Napa Valley Winery Video

The Trinchero family has been making wine in the Napa Valley since 1948, and Trinchero Napa Valley serves to honor the legacy of founder, Mario Trinchero. Wines bearing the Trinchero Napa Valley label are luxury-class, predominantly single-vineyard, wines from their Napa Valley estates. Each is painstakingly handcrafted and produced in limited quantities. They source their grapes from 100 acres of estate vineyards in prime Napa Valley appellations, including St. Helena, Mount Veeder, Rutherford and Atlas Peak.

One of the most prestigious wines of the world capable of great power and grace, Napa Valley Cabernet is a leading force in the world of fine, famous, collectible red wine. Today the Napa Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon are so intrinsically linked that it is difficult to discuss one without the other. But it wasn’t until the 1970s that this marriage came to light; sudden international recognition rained upon Napa with the victory of the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1976 Judgement of Paris.

Cabernet Sauvignon undoubtedly dominates Napa Valley today, covering half of the land under vine, commanding the highest prices per ton and earning the most critical acclaim. Cabernet Sauvignon’s structure, acidity, capacity to thrive in multiple environs and ability to express nuances of vintage make it perfect for Napa Valley where incredible soil and geographical diversity are found and the climate is perfect for grape growing. Within the Napa Valley lie many smaller sub-AVAs that express specific characteristics based on situation, slope and soil—as a perfect example, Rutherford’s famous dust or Stags Leap District's tart cherry flavors.
