Winemaker Notes

Extremely impressive for the price and utterly delicious right now. Glass-staining ruby. Highly complex bouquet displays cherry, candied licorice, wintermint, camphor and smoked meat. Weighty and deep, with sweet but energetic dark berry and cherry flavors, good mineral lift and a late note of bitter cherry skin. Aged in French oak, driven by fruit, smooth textured and glycerin laden mouthfeel.

A perennial Best Buy, Winner’s Tank’s 2008 Shiraz is a glass-coating opaque purple. It exhibits an excellent nose of violets, incense, blueberry, and blackberry. Layered on the palate with succulent flavors, this smooth-textured, lengthy effort will offer pleasure over the next 4-5 years.

The Winner's Tank, Australia
The Winner's Tank Winery Image
The Winner's Tank is a recent discovery that highlights what can be accomplished when an extremely talented winemaker gets his hands on some premium, Langhorne Creek fruit. Winner's Tank is a new venture between Reid Bosward of Kaesler vineyards, and David and Cathy Knight, owners of the Winner's Tank site. The name relates to an old water tank that sits in the corner of the vineyard. In true Aussie spirit, a stong rivalry exist between the three neighboring towns in the local Australian Rules Football competition. Each year the winning team heads out to the vineyard to the vineyard to paint the tank their team colors.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
