Tensley Syrah OGT (1.5 Liter Magnum) 2008
Syrah/Shiraz from California
Our 2008 OGT Syrah is once again a blend of 50% Colson Canyon Syrah, 25% Thompson Syrah, and 25% Tierra Alta Syrah. The Colson brings weight, inky color, and notes of chocolate, violets, and smoke while the Thompson asserts itself with bright red fruit, mouthwatering acidity and solid structure. The Tierra Alta balances out the equation with deep berry flavors and minerality complimented by a hint of white pepper. When we decided to name this wine for our son, Oliver Gunnar Tensley, we knew that each year we would ask ourselves – how does this wine reflect his personality? In this vintage we'd have to say that the Colson represents Oliver's open-heartedness, warmth and friendliness while the Thompson speaks to Oliver's more serious, grounded side. Finally the Tierra Alta reminds us of Oliver's quick wit and sense of fun and spontaneity. Our final OGT blend is a fruit forward Syrah that is rich, viscous and inviting.
The Wine Advocate - "The 2008 Syrah O.G.T. (100% Syrah from the Colson Canyon (50%), Thompson (25%), and Tierra Alta (25%) vineyards) exhibits a more Asian spice-like character with hints of soy, camphor, acacia flowers, blackberries, and blueberries. A wine of great intensity, full-bodied power, tremendous purity and depth, it is another tour de force from Joey Tensley. "
Wine Spectator - "Amazing aromas of pure, ripe blackberry, anise and flowers lead to subtle earthy mineral flavors. Brims with fruit on the palate, where this is rich, fleshy, full-bodied and elegant, with a long, lingering finish."
Tensley Wines is a family owned and operated winery focusing on vineyard designated Syrah within Santa Barbara County.
Established in 1998, the first release of Tensley totaled just 100 cases. In 2006, our production reached 3,300 cases and included seven single-vineyard Syrahs, the most in Santa Barbara County.
Though we've grown in size, our philosophy has never changed - source the best fruit possible and let the vineyard speak for itself. View all Tensley Wines
About Other CaliforniaView a map of Other California wineries
California has nearly 100 American Viticulture Areas (AVAs) and accounts for almost 90% of wine production in the United States. In our section of Other California, we include wines from smaller AVAs as well as wines from the California AVA. Here are a few smaller AVAs you may see on the label:
Livermore Valley AVA, located right outside of San Francisco and home to wineries such as Wente.
Lodi County AVA, an AVA further east of San Francisco and known for its excellent, old-vine Zinfandels.
San Francisco Bay AVA, a sprawling AVA that covers Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, to name a few. Wine that holds only the California AVA is typically a wine that includes grapes from a number of different AVAs, which leads to the general labeling of the wine as California. This does not denote the quality of the wine, only the diversity of where the grapes originate.
About CaliforniaIt's not rare to see a wine's country of origin listed as "California." A country into itself in the wine world, California makes enough varieties and styles to match many European wine countries. It produces a diverse range of wines that span the quality spectrum.
The most famous of the California wine regions is Napa Valley, and these wines are certainly outstanding – but it's not as broad and diverse as its larger neighbor, Sonoma County. Down south, Santa Barbara's Santa Maria Valley is well-known for its Rhône blends, as well as cool-climate varieties like Pinot and Chardonnay. The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.
