Winemaker Notes

This wine was largely (75%) barrel fermented, and 50% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. A full 80% of the chardonnay was oak aged for 10 months, with the remainder kept in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to enhance the fruit and acidity.

This complex Chardonnay has a seamless combination of tropical fruit and subtle oak tones. Impeccably balanced and vibrant, the wine shows great mouth feel and a persistent finish.

Professional Ratings

A bold chardonnay without excess oak, this wine's flavors bring to mind an apple pie with oatmeal crust. A wheat beer savor comes from the less, and the texture is satisfying and supple.

Taft Street Winery Image
The Taft Street story began in the 1970's, when John Tierney & friend Mike Martini began making wine in Mike Tierney's garage on Taft Street. The reputation of the "garagistes" wines (referring to small lots of cult wines produced by Bordeaux winemakers in garages) spread, and family and friends bonded Taft Street Winery on April Fool's Day, 1982, in the Russian River Valley town of Forestville. Today Taft Street focuses on making wines from the Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast appellations, as well as from nearby vineyards in Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley. Our goals have not changed - make the highest quality wines; sell them at a fair price, and most of all, have fun in the process.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
