Winemaker's Notes

The Last Hurrah Alas, the vineyard which produced these grapes is no more. After the '97 harvest, the old Zinfandel vines were pulled up and replaced by cabernet.

One of the motivations to produce a Howell Mountain was to present a Napa Valley hillside vineyard from a different appellation and terroir than our estate vineyards - a study in how well Zinfandel reflects where it is planted. Whereas our estate wines have a fruit core reminiscent of raspberries, black cherries and a hint of plums, Howell Mountain fruit has blueberries, blackberries and a hint of its volcanic soil. A very focused and rich fruit core balances tannins and present a wine that drinks beautifully now, yet will age gracefully for many years.
