Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Harvested from dramatic vineyards high above Napa Valley, the 2006 Diamond Mountain Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon speaks volumes about mountain-grown fruit. Inky and complex, this reserve wine is packed with intense blackberry character layered with dark chocolate, herbs and oak spice. The hint of wild herbs gives a distinctive, fresh mountain character to the core of dark berry flavors, while firm tannins support them through the lingering finish.

Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5% Merlot, 2.5% Petit Verdot

Critical Acclaim

"A silky vintage of Sterling's Diamond Mountain bottling, this has the superripe, apricot-like character that marked the area's cabernet in 2006. It melds that fruit into a fine structure, so that the tannins seem fruity, gentle and harmonious. The ferrous, earthy edge on that tannin keeps the wine mouthwatering. Serve this with roast squab stuffed with dried fruit. "

Sterling Vineyards was born in the 1960s, a time when creativity and entrepreneurial spirit abounded, especially in California. In 1964, Peter Newton, once a paper broker in England, purchased 70 acres of land in Calistoga and became a Napa Valley winemaker. He planted grapes others did not, bottled varietals others did not, and built a dramatic winery with an aerial tramway. His...

The Napa wine industry really took off in the 1980's, when vineyard...

Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
