The 2001 vintage is one where legendary wines are produced. This 2001 Staglin Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is such a wine. The vintage was earmarked by abundant heat in May and June followed by a cooler than normal July and August. This cooling trend gave the red grapes plenty of hang time and the wine shows it. There is a deep black color with ripe aromas of black cherry and plum. The flavors are mushroom, blueberry and distinctive caramel from the 100% new French oak barrels. The finish lingers with hints of chocolate, ripe plum and tobacco. The tannins are supple and silky with a lingering flavor of black tea. The wine is youthful and friendly now and should continue to develop beautifully for 10-15 years.
