The 2007 vintage is a stunning multifaceted wine, one of the best we have produced from this vineyard. It has intriguing aromas of spice, cherry, and concentrated fruit: restrained, but very complex. The multiple flavors feature a toasty, dusty-cherry component so typical of the Fiddletown area. The finish is long and lingering, and invites another taste.

96% Lubenko Vineyard Zinfandel, Fiddletown 4% Petite Syrah

"Grown at the Lubenko Vineyard from head-pruned vines planted in 1910, this is an intensely concentrated, bowl-you-over zin that manages to stay in balance. There's an iron-rich soil character that keeps it savory against the purple fruit, which will need time in bottle to grow more expressive. Scents of dark mushrooms, chili spice and leather all add to the complexity. Decant this several hours before dinner if you open it now, to serve with braised lamb."

I have to admit I'm having real trouble finding a zin that I like these days, since so many of them are old vine jammy fruit bombs. This one wasn't that, although it did have a fairly heavy body and luscious fruit flavors. However, there was a very powerful woody flavor on the wine that I didn't enjoy.
