Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009

The 2009 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir is a blend of 8 barrels from the Big Block Section, 5 barrels from the Hermanos' section, and two barrels from the Tina's section. In both Big Block and Hermanos we utilized some whole clusters in the fermentation as the stems showed good levels of ripeness. After 14-18 days on the skins we pressed the wine directly, using gravity, to French oak. Unlike most previous vintages, we felt that the 2009 would benefit from racking, so once we decided on the barrels in the final blend we racked them together and then back to barrel several months prior to bottling.
One of the truly distinguishing characteristics of most 2009 California Pinot Noirs is their structure. This is certainly true with the 2009 Siduri Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir. While this wine shows the great fruit concentration of previous releases, and the complexity of the better vintages from this vineyard, it is balanced out with the backbone and structure that we can only remember from the 1999 vintage (our favorite Pisoni previously). This is a wine that, while it drinks well now, will only improve with several years in the cellar.

Two Pinot Noir lovers, Adam and Dianna Lee, founded Siduri Wines in 1994. They produced only four and a half barrels of Pinot Noir that first vintage. Now they handcraft over 10,000 cases of Pinot Noir from vineyards ranging from Oregon's Willamette Valley down to the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Lucia Highlands AVAs. The largest of California's wine growing regions, the Central Coast produces the majority of California's wine. The district sprawls out, covering most of the vineyard land between San Francisco and Santa Barbara. Smaller sub-AVAs of the Central Coast include Monterey Bay, Paso Robles, Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Maria Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains and many others.
Notable FactsGrape varieties range from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Some Central Coast wine is generic, bulk wine that contributes to the high production numbers of the area. But many winemakers and wineries, particular in some of the smaller AVAs, are small production artisans, creating unique and high-quality wine. The great thing about the Central Coast is its diversity - you're able to find a number of grape varieties and styles at a number of different price points.

The Central Coast, the largest California AVA, has many different microclimates that lead to a wide range of wines with many sub-AVAs.

Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.
