Shirvington Shiraz 2003
Syrah/Shiraz from McLaren Vale, Australia
The wine was 100% barrel fermented and matured for about 12 months in 80% new American oak and 20% one year old American oak. This wine will give you all the flavors and nuances you are looking for in a McLaren Vale Shiraz. It has a lifted intense nose with chocolate, licorice, cherries and spice characters. The palate is mouth watering with layers of complexity and length. The fruit flavors are powerful, yet velvety and seamless. It is a delight to drink. It is drinking well now and will cellar for many years.
The Wine Advocate - "The big, concentrated yet velvety-textured, magnificent 2003 Shiraz reveals a seamless integration of tannin, acidity, wood, and alcohol, it boasts aromas of blackberry liqueur intermixed with violets. The fragrant aromatics are followed by an explosively rich, full-bodied, unctuously-textured, compelling Shiraz. Interestingly, this 2003 does not appear to be quite as powerful or concentrated as the 2002s or 2001s, but that’s like splitting hairs. The evolution of this 2003 will be fascinating to follow. "
Our story started in 1996 when we, the Shirvington Family (Lynne, Paul and sons Tony and Mark), purchased 16 hectares of prime land in Willunga, South Australia. After extensive researching and touring of Australia’s major wine regions, this area was chosen for its ability to consistently produce outstanding table wines of great character and quality. Willunga is just south of McLaren Vale on the Fleurieu Peninsula, an area internationally renowned for its red wine, in particular Shiraz.
In the winter of 1996, work began on the development of our first vineyard, Redwind.
Further purchases in 1997 and 2001 saw the development of two new vineyards, Kurrawyba and Manjalda, in McLaren Flat and McLaren Vale.
Working closely with our viticulturist and winemakers, the quality of fruit was such that our first commercial release, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon, was awarded Wine of the Year at the prestigious McLaren Vale Wine Show. This wine, coupled with our 2001 Shiraz, was the first to be selected by Dan Philips of The Grateful Palate, for distribution in the United States.
We will continue to produce wines that are testimony to McLaren Vale’s great reputation.

McLaren Vale is home to the oldest Australian vineyard, with grapes planted in 1838. It's a coastal area, the Indian Ocean bordering the west, which leads to a cooling factor that prevents the grapes from getting too hot. In all, the climate is a perfect one for the vines.
Notable FactsIn McLaren Vale, there are vines as far as the eye can see. As in other parts of Australia, Shiraz and Grenache are the top grapes of the region, with some Cabernet Sauvignon planted as well. While red rules, whites are able to hold their own here too. With the warm yet reasonable Mediterranean climate, white grapes like Chardonnay, Semillon and even some Sauvignon Blanc grow well. The wines are round and smooth and the producers in the regions are excellent.
About AustraliaLike the United States, which is about the same size, Australia's winemaking regions are huddled into one or two pockets of the country. The state of South Australia, which produces about 60% of the country's wine, also has the most wineries and sub-regions, including McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Barossa Valley. New South Wales is home to the Hunter Valley, while the smaller, southern state of Victoria is best known for theYarra Valley. Head way west to the very large state of Western Australia and you'll find the tiny region of Margaret River at the southern tip.

Alcohol By Volume GuideMost wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer.
