Sella & Mosca La Cala Vermentino 2005
White Wine
from Sardinia, Italy
winemaker's notes:
A favorite of the jet set at Sardinia's chic resorts, La Cala is the ultimate definition of the Vermentino grape. It is romantically named for a small, secluded cove fringed by violet-colored thistles on the edge of the Sella & Mosca estate. Few wines rival La Cala for its exceptional affinity with seafood, thanks to the very subtle presence of a natural marine salinity in the wine, credited to the Mediterranean location of Sella & Mosca's Vermentino vineyards.
The Sella & Mosca property in Sardinia is one of Italy's most impressive and progressive wine estates. Impeccably maintained, this 1,600-acre estate is credited with placing Sardinian wines firmly on the international wine-lover's map. Moreover, it includes the second largest contiguous vineyard in Italy. Acclaimed for world-class wines made from Vermentino and Cannonau grapes, Sella & Mosca is also behind the single-vineyard Marchese di Villamarina, among Italy's greatest and most sought-after Cabernets.

This has been one of my favorite wines since I lived in Sardegna for two years. I have lived many places in the US since returning and have always had to search out a vendor for this delightful wine. Of course the perfect place to drink it is at a cafe on the island but poolside here in San Diego does pretty well also! try this wine.

Light, but sharp enough to make it interesting. Served it to once-a-year wine drinkers and some seasons wine drinkers for the holidays. Both said I "should buy a case of that", so I did. Very good, easy to drink wine... perfect to get the evening started right.

Vermentino 'La Cala' it is a paradox : white wines that come from the south of Italy and main islands tends to be high in alchool and low in acidicy : here we have 'La Cala' with an 11.5% of alcohol, ant a nice acidity.
A touch of saltiness, given by the proximity of the wineyards to the sea (4 miles, and almost at sea level).
A touch of effervescence (happiness), from co2 left at the end of the fermentation process.
Pronounced minerality, and the last sensation that the wine leaves to your palate is the taste of the caper.
Good companion of dishes prepared with shell fish and perfect with oysters.
My pairing is : Spaghetti alla Marinara with a white wine souce !
