The fruitful aromas of the wine's youth are still vibrant, with fresh green apple, lime and pineapple jumping out of the glass. Refined, bottle-aged characters of hazelnut, honey and baked brioche chime in. The palate pleases with a crisp entry and the flavorful essences of white peach, key lime and juicy tropical fruit. While a creamy depth builds on the mid-palate, the wines acidic backbone and a certain mineral drive stretch into a long, riding finish. The 2001 J. Schram should develop beautifully for at least 20 more years.
"Pretty much as gorgeous as California bubbly gets. It’s dry and yeasty and rich in citrus, peach and apply flavors, with an enormously fine structure. Feels smooth as silk, clean as a whistle, with a delicate but complex mousse. Young and vibrant, with mouthwatering acidity, this Champagne-like brut should develop bottle complexity through 2013."
"A bold, rich style, with aromas of yeasty cinnamon roll and ripe golden apple, backing it up with refinement and structure. Flavors of Asian pear, with hints of lime and fresh ginger, linger awhile."
"Both elegant and powerful. Bouquet of fresh-baked bread, persimmon, sliced green apple, lime and tropical fruits. Finely balanced flavors of grapefruit and lime with thirst-quenching acidity and a hint of fresh ginger. A vin de garde."
The Wine News
"Long on the aged yeastiness of classic Methode Champenoise with scattered suggestions of buttered toast showing here and there, it is crisp and weighty and slightly austere all at the same time."
Focused on Schramsberg's top Chardonnay barrel and tank lots, and aged for seven years prior to release, J. Schram is the winery's signature Brut sparkling wine. Jack and Jamie Davies revived the historic vineyards and cellars in 1965, with a mission to produce California's first world-class sparkling wines. Today, led by their son Hugh, Schramsberg's team continues with this commitment to quality and innovation. Schramsberg also produces the J. Schram Rose, Reserve, Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, Brut Rose, Cremant Demi-Sec and J. Davies Diamond Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
