Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

Aromas of citrus, lime and grapefruit, balanced with ripe acidity and stony mineral notes. Taste of ripe fruit combined with fresh elegance. The key words for vintage 2011 at Saarstein were "early" and "just right." Christian Ebert, of Weingut Schloss Saarstein, says, "For our estate we can say that 2011 is one of the best vintages of the last decades quality-wise."

Critical Acclaim

"Christian Ebert farms 25 vertiginously steep acres of grey slate falling away from his castle on the Saar. His old vines produced a compact 2011, a wine that needs time to unravel to show all of its complexities. Right now, it's a tight ball of yellow peach fruit held in a fine mesh of acidity and minerality. The wine’s vibrancy stays with you long after each sip."
