The 2008 Schild Estate Barossa Shiraz is another fine example of a classic regional style from this renowned region, with Barossa regionality showing through at its best in this wine. The 2008 growing season had everything. An ideal build up, a very congested ripening period and then a heat wave in early march ensured that it was an exciting and busy vintage for our winemaking and vineyard teams. The Shiraz was picked early to avoid the predicted heat and has reaped the benefits as a result and is characterized by real depth of flavor and great balance.
The wine has a vibrant rich red color, with a bouquet of ripe cherries, rich spices and licorice with some vanillin undertones derived fromt the extended maturation in new and old American Oak. On the palate the flavors explode in a fusion of complex oak and well integrated tannins with a backbone of ripe black plums.
"Opaque ruby. Heady, intensely perfumed bouquet displays cherry-cola, dark berries, olive and violet, along with a smoky overtone. Deeply pitched and sappy but energetic, offering pungent cherry and cassis flavors lifted by zesty acidity. A note of boysenberry comes up on the finish, which leaves notes of mint and cracked pepper behind. For a rich wine this shows very good focus and vivacity."
