SHARDANA is the name for the native
Sardinians — and the mysterious red symbol on the
label shown above is a Phoenician S.
Three thousand years later, Neil and Maria Empson
chose this ancient word for their own tribute to
beautiful Sardinia: a full-bodied, voluptuous red from
85% indigenous (partly pre-Phylloxera!)
Carignano grapes and 15% Shiraz.
The style was inspired by Sulcis' exceptional terroir
and reflects the region's power-packed, layered
complexity; the depth of its seas, the spicy fragrance
of its ever-present winds.
"This gorgeous Carignano-based wine from the sun-drenched island of Sardinia shows amazing harmony and personality. There are rich and ripe notes here of blackberry, mature cherry, tobacco, leather and a touch of exotic spice. It's rich, smooth and velvety on the close. Very nice."
"Dark ruby. Perfumed aromas of red and dark berries, with a strong salty overtone. The creamy, seamless raspberry and red cherry flavors are complicated by tobacco and candied flowers. Turns more tannic with air, finishing with a gentle licorice quality and a touch of alcoholic warmth. Still, it's a very successful wine."

The arenaceous terrain of Sulcis’ coastline is unique in that pre-phylloxera rootstock
survives and thrives: the finely textured, wind-swept sand naturally prevents phylloxera from depositing its eggs!

Fairly removed from Italy, both geographically and culturally, Sardinia has more grazing animals than vineyards. An agricultural community, the small island is secluded. With high influences from Spain as much as Italy, the grapes of the region hail from both countries.
The most popular and most planted variety is Cannonau (otherwise known as...Read More About Sardinia
Other Red Red wines are certainly not limited to Cabernet and Pinot Noir - or even Nebbiolo and Grenache. There are a multitude of grape varieties throughout the world, however, in a Darwinian sense, survival of the fittest only brings us wines made from grapes that can adapt to changing climates and winemaking techniques.
