Alcohol By Volume Guide

  • 10%
  • 16+%
Most wine ranges from 10-16% alcohol by volume. Some varietals tend to have higher (for example Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon) or lower alcohol levels (Pinot Noir and many white varietals), but there is always some variation from producer to producer. Some wine falls outside of this range, for instance Port weighs in closer to 20%, while Muscat and Riesling are usually a bit below 10%.

Winemaker's Notes

This "single vineyard" wine represents the ultimate expression of a true Cabernet Sauvignon, possessing an intense ruby color and a complex, mature aroma redolent of vanilla, coffee and tobacco. On the palate, it is elegant and enduring with an intense fruit presence of raspberries and other berries. Its outstanding harmony, sophistication and complexity make this wine a classic.

Critical Acclaim

"After a rooty, spicy opening that includes aromas of tree bark, leather, marzipan and ripe berry fruits, this perennial winner shows superb balance, mouthfeel and overall integration. Flavors of cassis, cherry, plum, dry spice and chocolate finish long, lightly herbal and with complexities. Drink through 2020.

Editors' Choice"
93 Points

"This rich style drips with chocolate mousse notes that envelop a concentrated core of dark currant, roasted plum and black fig flavors. Shows plenty of mocha and cocoa powder details as well, with hints of mint, all supported by fresh acidity. Drink now through 2020."
92 Points

"Inky ruby. Dark berries, cola, vanilla and pipe tobacco on the highly perfumed nose. Lush and creamy in texture, offering sweet, floral blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors complicated by a smoky nuance. Shows impressive energy on the finish, which features supple tannins and a whiplash of smoky dark berry fruit. Built to age; I'd stash this one away for at least another seven or eight years."

In 1980, it was acquired by its present owner, Ricardo Claro, under whom Santa Rita has reaped the rewards of continuous...

Learn About Chile

(CHEE-lay) Long and thin, Chile has a lot of land north to south. The wine region here is a series of districts based near Santiago. The vineyards are protected by the Pacific on the west and the Andes mountains on the east. This could help explain why the climate changes more from east to west than north to south - also why the country has remained phylloxera free....

Perhaps that title is due to its ability to grow worldwide in a number of climates, or to the fact that it produces wine with such character yet such diversity. Either way, this grape is responsible, as a whole or a partner, for some of the greatest wines in the world. In Bordeaux,...
